Arizona State University (ASU) is located in the Phoenix area of Arizona. It is a public research university, which means it awards a certain number of doctorate degrees per year, spends a stipulated amount on research and has a number of research-focused faculty as well as other factors. It also awards bachelors and masters degrees. It has four campuses with 14 divisions including the Tempe campus, the West Campus in northwest Phoenix, the Downtown Phoenix campus and the Polytechnic campus in Mesa, Arizona.
In 1885, ASU began as the Tempe Normal School for the Arizona Territory. In 1945, The Arizona Board of Regents renamed the school Arizona State College, and in 1958, it became a university.
The Mission of ASU is to be a model for American Universities that is measured by who is included in their programs, and not by who is excluded. They focus on pursuing research that benefits the public good and assume responsibility for the economic, cultural and social health, vitality and well being of the community. They aim to give quality education with a high rate of graduation as soon as possible. They are committed to community outreach.
The Grady Gammage Memorial Auditorium at the Tempe campus was built in honor of the president of the university from 1933 to 1959. It was the last public commission taken by architect Frank Lloyd Wright took and is on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. The Tempe campus is just eight miles east of downtown Phoenix and has large pedestrian malls and Palm Walk. Palm Walk, with 111 palm trees, is a favorite place for students to gather. There is also an art collection that is considered one of the 10 best collections in a public university in the U.S.
Established in 1984, the West campus is 12 miles to the northwest from downtown Phoenix. The West campus is considered a Phoenix Point of Pride because it is almost completely powered by solar energy. The architecture has been patterned after the architecture of the University of Oxford. It is the smallest ASU campus and the buildings are arranged around a quad. The West campus programs focus on interdisciplinary programs in the liberal arts and sciences, business and education.
The newest campus is the Downtown Phoenix campus established in 2006. The campus consists of new, urban style buildings along with the reuse of an existing 1930s post office, which is on the National Register of Historic Places. It is the home of the College of Nursing and Health Innovation, the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication and the School of Criminology and Criminal Justice.
The Polytechnic campus was founded in 1996. It is 33 miles from downtown Phoenix to the southeast in Mesa, Arizona. It is on what was once the Williams Air Force Base. It has over 40 technical and professional programs that give bachelors, masters and doctorate degrees through the College of Technology and Innovation. It also has selected programs of the W.P. Carey School of Business and Agribusiness and Resource Management.
